Tips for Throwing a Simple Kid’s Birthday Party

When it comes to things our kids look forward to each year, birthday parties (of any kind) rank high on the list along with no school days, summer vacation, and Christmas. While it might be tempting to throw them the biggest or fanciest soirée of the year, chances are time and budget (not to mention your sanity) for such an event far exceeds what you’re looking to spend/use.

Quite frankly, with 5 kids, I have found the simpler the party, the better. Even if you’re just doing something with your immediate family, it can still be fun and low-stress. This year, my now 7-year-old, had a party at home just us (I mean, we’re a family of 7 and now my mom lives with us… so we’re pretty much the size of a party on our own), but we made it fun and she had a blast. Here are a few things I did that made the party easy and gave me time to make a homemade cake, but if you don’t have time… just buy one, Seriously, there are some amazing local bakers coming out and showing their talents!

Tip 1:

Make your meal slow cooker friendly.

Let’s be real, even if you decide to have people over, you don’t want to be stuck in the kitchen making tons of food. Slow cooker meals are great for things like this, you prep everything ahead of time and stick it in the slow cooker. We did brats because that’s what MJ wanted, but you could have pulled pork or tacos. You could even have a second one with means or meatballs!

Tip 2:

Come up with fun and stress-free activities (involve older siblings)

My two oldest children really wanted to do something special with For MJ that all three of younger their sisters could enjoy. My son organized a basketball shoot-off, and my eldest daughter transformed our lawn tractor into a “hay ride”. To make it even more like a ride, she asked me to create tickets. With a bubble machine set up, she slowly took the girls on a ride, which they thoroughly enjoyed.

Obviously, there’s no obligation to follow this suggestion. It’s entirely up to you. One idea could be to have a movie-themed birthday celebration and give out tickets as party favors. Regardless of what you decide, it’s sure to be an enjoyable experience for the children and a memorable keepsake. Piñatas are always fun

My children are big fans of the piñata. My eldest is now responsible for moving the piñata around when it’s time to hit it. Although my three little ones are still too young for blindfolds, we still have a good time, and the birthday boy/girl selects the candy we stuff it with. You can typically find reasonably priced piñatas both in stores and online.

Tip 3:

Don’t Stress on the Cake

I made this Red Velvet cake for my daughter. but don’t stress thinking you need to make a cake from scratch! I have definitely bought my fair share of cakes (Especially when MJ went through a major unicorn faze and need one of those cakes that looked like a unicorn… yeah my skills are nowhere near there).

Finished Red Velvet Cake sitting on a ceramic plate surrounded by red velvet crumble.

Ultimately, remember to have fun! Too often, we place an abundant amount of pressure on ourselves to throw the perfect party, with the most impressive cake, food, and decorations. Regardless of how it looks on Instagram, the key is to just be in the moment! Enjoy the event and remember, the kids will undoubtedly have a good time as long as you are having a good time.
