Tartar sauce is a must for my husband with Fried Fish. Before my 3 youngest came to be, I would actually make the mayonnaise by hand, then make the tartar sauce, needless to say, that has gone to the wayside. Although, homemade mayonnaise is AMAZING! However, it doesn’t store long and it does take a little extra effort (which can be worth it, but because of the shelf life, it makes it a bit difficult for me to do all the time).

When it comes to tartar sauce, I can say, that homemade is the best and you can’t replicate it with store-bought, it’s not even close. The best part, you can adjust it to your taste.

Simplicity is best with this recipe. All the ingredients are basic and available at pretty much any grocery store.

About the Ingredients

  • Mayonnaise can also be replaced with vegan mayo if that’s your preference, I have also used greek yogurt and it gives a really nice creaminess to it, it will have a different texture from typical tarter, but still good.
  • Dill relish is what really makes this. If you don’t have dill relish, chop up some dill pickles instead.
  • Worcestershire Sauce gives it a great salty, umami taste.
  • Fish sauce has a very distinct smell, but it tastes AMAZING in dishes! It adds that umami punch you want. For more details read my How to Use Fish Sauce Blog Post.
