green onion bulbs cut, but not planted.

I LOVE to use green onions in my recipes. I use them in a lot of my food. But constantly buying them and throwing out the bulbs is such a waste. So, today I’m showing you my easy hack for replanting Green Onion bulbs and helping you make one more food item in your kitchen last longer.

Replanting green onion bulbs is a great way to create a “more than one-time” use for this amazing veg. Bonus! It makes it readily available for anytime use. Here’s how to do it…

How to re-plant green onion bulbs

Doing the below method works for any grocery or farmer’s market green onions.

1) Leave about 1- 2 inches of white/bulb.

When you cut your green onion, leave about 1-2 inches of white so you can re-plant easily.

2) Plant in a planter or in the ground.

I have planters in the summer outside with herbs and lettuce that I plant the roots, but you could also just simply plant them into the ground. Just make sure you know where they are for later use.

3) Water immediately after planting

Like seeds or any plant/root, always water after you plant anything really. In this. case, because you’re planting these so close to the ground if they happen to get a little covered with dirt, just move some of the dirt off.

4) Leave them to grow

To ensure you can continue this process a few times, give the plant a chance to grow to an average size that you would see in the grocery store (between 8-24 inches).

5) When ready to use

The green onion can be left in the pot and cut about a half inch up from the dirt OR you can pull the entire plant, Cut about an inch from the roots and that piece can be replanted again! You can do either way infinitely!

Can I do this with store-bought green onions?

Yes, yes you can. Many of the bulbs that have been started came from ones I bought at the grocery store. It’s a great way to lessen waste and also have fresh green onion readily available.
