What Is Brunch?
Brunch is a meal usually served from late morning to early afternoon. The word “brunch” is a portmanteau (a word blending the sounds and combining the meanings of two others) of “breakfast” and “lunch”, hence… BR-unch. Typically, you eat breakfast & lunch food together at an early lunchtime (or late breakfast time) and so, have brunch in lieu of both breakfast and lunch.
5 Popular Brunch Items
Brunch menus here in America feature a wide range of sweet and savory breakfast and lunch foods. Some of the most common brunch menu items tend to include:
- Eggs: Fried eggs, eggs Benedict, omelets, or scrambled are all great options.
- Bread: French toast, pancakes, waffles, and other bread-based dishes, like burgers and sandwiches, are popular.
- Fruit: Berries, apples, melons, and citrus fruits are popular sides to have with your other brunch items. Fruit can also be featured as a topper for french toast, pancakes, waffles, and yogurt.
- Pastries: Baked goods such as donuts, banana bread, cinnamon rolls, muffins, coffee cake, or scones add some sweetness to brunch.
- Drinks: Fun beverages (alcoholic or not), such as specialty coffee drinks, Mimosas, and Bloody & Virgin Marys, are popular brunchtime drinks.

Scallion-Potato Pancakes
Have you heard of Kartóffelpuffer? The kartóffelpuffer is a traditional German potato pancake that is usually served at Christmas time. Well, this is my mash-up of that pancake with some ingredients from traditional Chinese Scallion Pancakes (葱油饼)
This is probably one of my favorite mashups of my and my husband’s cultures, it’s also one of my kids’ all-time favorite sides. I use the basics of the German potato pancake and replaced onions with scallions, then I added fish sauce and mushroom bullion to add an amazing umami flavor.
Deviled Eggs (With Bacon)
Deviled eggs are a classic go-to for any party/brunch. These little eggs are topped with bacon, chives, and paprika.

S’mores Coffee Drink
How about S’mores in a Cup? Yup, that’s right! S’mores in a cup! I mean… why not? It’s fall, the weather is FINALLY cooperating and feeling fall-like, and I know pumpkin is the go-to flavor for so many… I mean, even I have a few pumpkin recipes on my blog. But another flavor that just screams fall is S’mores (at least for me)!
Cranberry Bellini
Cheers! It’s the holiday season, which means it’s also cocktail season. So for part two of my cranberry recipes, I’m going to share my Wisconsin Twist on an Italian Classic, the Bellini! Bellinis are sparkling Italian cocktails made with two simple ingredients: Prosecco and white peach purée. They’re fizzy and refreshing, and perfect to change up with nice cool Cranberry Ganita instead of peaches.
