Golden Milk Latte (With Coffee)

It’s New Year’s Eve! I always associated gold with the new year. So why not start your New Year’s with a fun Golden Milk Latte?

If you’re a fan of chai lattes, turmeric, and coffee, you’re going to love this coffee recipe. Did you know that the original Golden Milk Latte was created by Chef Paul Bertolli? It was a mixture of warm water, ground coffee, raw sugar, coconut milk, and spices. While I enjoy the original version… I decided to change it up a bit and make my version with one of my favorite spices. I add Chinese Five Spice to mine to add some wonderfully warm and familiar spices.

WHAT IS GOLDEN MILK?

Golden milk (also known as Turmeric milk or even turmeric tea) is a traditional Indian beverage used for all kinds of ailments, from colds to coughs and even stress for centuries. To make true golden milk, all you need is turmeric and milk. Typically, households will add more warming spices to the mix, including ginger, cinnamon, and cardamom.

WHAT MAKES THIS DRINK A LATTE IS THE COFFEE

A latte, at its core, is an espresso drink with frothy milk. Somewhere along the line, other things, like golden milk, became a Latte. So I’m here to change that and give you an authentic Golden Milk Latte with giving you a complex coffee perfect for any time of the day!

Espresso vs Coffee?

ESPRESSO VS COFFEE?

Due to the finer grind, and the pressurized brewing method, espresso has a lower grounds-to-water ratio creating something thicker and more intense than coffee.

For this recipe, either is fine. To keep the integrity of the coffee flavor that goes with this version of a golden milk latte, the ratios are different for milk vs coffee/espresso. If you use espresso, you will use more milk. If you use coffee, you will use less milk and more coffee. The results, either way, will be perfect. I promise.

Notes about this Drink:

  • Be sure to blend the ingredients very well. You will have a few grains of the spices in the bottom of the cup, you can always have a spoon in the cup to stir as you drink. Not a fan? Strain the latte with a fine mesh strainer before drinking. This helps eliminate more spice remnants (just note, you will still have some).
  • This drink can be enjoyed iced. Simply make it as directed and pour over ice.
  • Milk can be replaced with other alternatives. Coconut Milk, is my personal favorite non-dairy alternative. Almond milk is another good one. Lactose-Free milk is perfect if you still want dairy, but not lactose.

Try it Iced

I love this drink in the summertime. It’s a fun change up from the typical mochas or vanilla lattes usually ordered/made.

Description

This Golden Milk Latte is a true latte. Milk, cinnamon, Chinese five spice, and turmeric are added to a shot of espresso (don’t worry I have a coffee version too for those who don’t have an espresso machine) and some maple syrup for sweetness. The flavors are warm and cozy. Drink it hot or iced. It’s a simple recipe that’s quick and easy to make, ready in ten minutes, and only needs six ingredients!


Ingredients

Using Espresso

  • 1 shot of Espresso
  • 1 cup milk (Or heavy cream for a creamier version)
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric
  • 1/2 tsp Cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp Chinese Five Spice
  • 1 Tablespoon Maple syrup (More or less, this is to taste)

Using Coffee/Cold Brew

  • 1 cup of coffee (or Cold Brew)
  • 1/4 cup of milk/cream
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric
  • 1/2 tsp Cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp Chinese Five Spice
  • 1 Tablespoon Maple syrup (More or less, this is to taste)


Instructions

  1. Brew 1 shot of espresso (or 1 cup of your favorite Coffee).
  2. Add the spices to the milk (Or heavy cream/dairy alternative)
  3. Froth the milk (Or heavy cream/dairy alternative)
  4. Pour the espresso into a mug with maple syrup.
  5. Add the frothed, spiced milk. Sprinkle a bit of cinnamon on the top, if you’re feeling extra fancy.

Notes

  • Be sure to blend the ingredients very well. You will have a few grains of the spices in the bottom of the cup, you can always have a spoon in the cup to stir as you drink. If you’re not a fan, you can strain with a fine mesh strainer before drinking to eliminate more spice remnants.
