DIY Terrarium (You don’t have to water)
This simple DIY terrarium project with a printable scavenger hunt sheet for kids to use for all their nature finds to add.

Day something or other of Quarantine and it’s FINALLY nice here in Wisconsin. So we are outside A LOT!!!!! Sometimes, I like to send the kids out to look for fallen branches, pine cones, and pieces of bark, so we can make fun projects. This past weekend was the DIY terrarium project.
I had some Sola Succulents hand-painted by Jackie’s Sola Boutique and wasn’t really sure what I would do with them. Originally was going to make hanging pots, for a Craft Show, but then a Pandemic Came… and that went out the window. So… What’s a girl to do with a bunch of hand-painted Succulents? Make Terrariums you don’t have to water!
We had so much fun making them, I thought I’d share what we did with you. In fact, if you want to jump straight into the Scavenger Hunt and not have to find all the other things.
Items you’ll need:
- Glass container
- Gravel (aquarium gravel works really well for this)
- Styrofoam that will fit in your glass vessel. This is supposed to just sit in the bottom, so nothing too big, you can cut it if need be.
- Fake succulents. I purchased mine from Jackie’s Sola Boutique. I highly recommend her. Her work is amazing, and they look so real. But you could use any type you prefer.
- Items from Nature (see the Scavenger Hunt checklist)
OK, now we’re ready to assemble our DIY terrarium.
Step One
Take your vessel and line it with a thin line of gravel.
Step Two
Insert the toothpicks into the Styrofoam. You will only need about half of the toothpick sticking out to attach the succulent.
Step Three
Place your Styrofoam (with the toothpicks where you want the succulent placed) on top of the thin lining of the gravel.
Step Four
Cover the Styrofoam with gravel. You will want to leave a little so you can put it around the succulent.
Step Five
Place succulents into the toothpick, and be careful to make sure you poke the toothpick through into the middle of the succulent.
Step Six
Pour the last of the gravel into the glass container (try to get it under the succulent to cover any possible bare spots on the Styrofoam.
Step Seven
Place your nature finds how you want into the jar.
